Damien Kamholtz

The delicately layered paintings of Damien Kamholtz form ambiguous narratives that both challenge and enthral. The artist works in a slow process of accumulation, building up layered glazes, lines and faceted colours to create veils of soft shadows masking forgotten images. Invoking presence and absence, substance and spectre, the paintings are deliberately enigmatic to carve open a space for personal interpretation and imagination. The cast of characters are arranged on the pictorial stage and the viewer must conjure the scene and script for themselves. In this way, Kamholtz encourages the viewer to embark on the elusive journey presented to them.
