Kate Dorrough’s new series of ceramic figurines are inspired by the 19th century traditional English Shropshire figures of courting couples and pagan shepherds and shepherdesses.
The artist’s playful characters have unashamedly removed their clothing, subverting the constructs of the traditional figurine. Proclaiming a sense of naivety, they depict an innocent enjoyment of sex and sexuality. the titles of the works also reveal a political intent, commenting on the machinations of the art world. kate dorrough has made these decorative figurines, which once graced the mantelpieces of respectable homes, sexy parables of our time.
