Leah Fraser in 'Mental As...'

Leah Fraser, An elemental heart, acrylic and polyester on canvas, 62 x 82 cm

To support Mental Health Week, Arthouse Gallery's Leah Fraser has created and donated a beautifully poignant painting for the ABC 'Mental As... Art Auction.'

Titled An elemental heart, the work is based on a person suffering from bipolar disorder. The subject of the painting described to Fraser an overwhelming connection to nature and a hallucination of a figure that appeared in their manic state. Like nature, bipolar has dark and light, highs and lows. The artist wanted to depict someone in this dualistic state, through whom nature is rushing, in a way that is both euphoric and terrifying.

Alongside Fraser, the other artists involved are Ben Quilty, Daniel Boyd, Del Kathryn Barton, Euan Macleod, Fiona Lowry, Reg Mombassa, Richard Bell, Robert Malherbe and Tim Sharp. Their works, each exploring themes of mental illness, will be auctioned online from 2 – 12 October 2014.

In addition to the art auction, there will be a two-hour, live TV fundraising event on 10 October, Friday Night Crack Up, wherein Australia’s biggest personalities - comedians, actors, sportspeople, and musicians – will come together and encourage Australians to support mental health research.

The artworks will be on display to the public in ABC’s Ultimo foyer from 29 September to 10 October.
