We are delighted to announce that Nicola Moss has been selected as a finalist in the prestigious Wynne Prize at the Art Gallery of New South Wales.
Opening 10 May, the Wynne Prize selects the best in Australian landscape painting and figurative sculpture celebrating the diversity of representations in Australia.
Queensland based artist Nicola Moss has been selected for her incredible work City and Nature — Darling Harbour, and this is the first time Moss has been selected for the Wynne Prize. Her painting composed of intricate paper cut outs laden with monotypes and textural mark makings assembled on the canvas is an enthralling landscape of the Chinese Garden of Friendship at Sydney's Darling Harbour. Peaceful, serene and meditative, this painting is a harmonious urban cityscape reflecting our vast and multicultural Australian landscape.
The Chinese Garden of Friendship at Darling Harbour is a small curated green space surrounded by city buildings. Built in 1988 to mark Australia’s bicentenary, the garden symbolises the friendship between Sydney and the city of Guangzhou, China. Forming part of my City and Nature project, this work explores our layered and intrinsic relationship with green space. City and Nature is a place where town planning, heritage and culture, mixes with maintenance regimes, leisure and a sense of tranquility. As we adapt to increasing temperatures, I am thinking about the role plants contribute to create liveable city environments. I believe sustainable green spaces are vital for our well-being, both physical and mental. - Nicola Moss, Artist Statement for City and Nature — Darling Harbour 2025
