Robyn Sweaney announced as a finalist in the Wynne Prize 2024

Art Gallery of New South Wales

We are thrilled to announce that Robyn Sweaney is a finalist in the prestigious Wynne Prize 2024. A now five times finalist, Sweaney has been selected for her incredible work “Little by little’ which will be on display at the Art Gallery of New South Wales.

‘This painting of a permanent caravan site in Wooli Holiday Park captures a slice of life in the unassuming northern NSW coastal town on Bundjalung Country, some 200 km from the artist’s home in Murwillumbah. Struck by the poignant contradiction of a ‘permanent’ caravan, Sweaney observes that these converted dwellings demonstrate ‘resourcefulness, adaptation and a human need for close connection to the landscape and others within it’. She documents a carefully placed blue vase and row of chairs, hinting at the communal outdoor life of the home’s absent owners. In the face of modern dilemmas like homelessness and a national housing crisis, Sweaney considers what a home is or could be. A five-time Wynne Prize finalist, Sweaney won the Trustees’ Watercolour Prize in 2019.’

The Wynne Prize is on display at the Art Gallery of New South Wales from 8 June - 8 September 2024. It then continues on a museum tour until 15 June 2025.
