‘My father is blind and as a result mostly sedentary. One of the pleasures he really enjoys is to sit at the front of his house in the sun and feel the heat and light on his skin. We care for him at home and often give him a ‘foot spa’ on the weekends, washing and massaging his feet to help his blood circulation. Witnessing his disability and increasing frailty has taught me to appreciate our humanity and my own life more. It is the little pleasures of his life that have become so important to his daily happiness. Sitting in the sun and drying his feet in the air is a simple, undervalued joyful experience. I made this painting as a companion portrait for the portrait of Anne Ferguson, my mother.’ -Jo Bertini, 2024
