Kate Ballis: Infra Realism
Manuscript Publishing

Palm Springs was a familiar but tired muse to Kate Ballis who converted a digital camera for infrared, to see it in a new light. In her book we experience the land through a new lens, which highlights parts of nature that are not visible to our eye. The ‘all seeing’ images suggest a kind of spiritualism but she acknowledges that the emerald fronds and cacti, teamed with hot pink pool decks and colonnades paired with an orange-citrus sky could also be 1980s nostalgia. Either way, risking a new approach seduced Ballis and extended her curiosity for the Mars-like desert with its kooky commercialism and modernist lilt to Joshua Tree, Sedona and the Atacama Desert.
